Since the effort was launched of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, 99.9% of the wild polio virus has been eliminated! We are in the home stretch to a 100% polio-free world! The last stage is challenging but essential. We cannot rest until the world has no new reported cases of the wild polio virus for three years. Of the 125 countries identified as polio-endemic in 1988, only two remain - truly remarkable!

It’s official! Governor Joe begins first day on the job. Tori Hettinger, District Office Administrator and President of Westchester Club, gives Governor Joe keys to the District Office. Here he is seen trying hard to do simple task of unlocking door with key.
This time marks an annual tradition in Rotary. We see new club presidents and leaders eager to begin their work serving our members. We see club members beginning to plan local service projects and other club events. This reminds one of spring time. All around us, life awakens. So, to, in Rotary. Under new leadership and direction, we summon in ourselves a heightened sense to unit with our fellow members to “do good”. We each hold the key to unlock the full potential of giving of ourselves to serve others. Together as People of Action we can help make the lives of others brighter.

ELMER R. JORDAN — Past Rotary Club President, Past District Governor 5260, Past Director Rotary International 1991-1993. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of PDG and Past RI Director Elmer Jordan. Elmer's home club, the Rotary Club of Calabasas, submitted the following touching sentiments about him when he was recently awarded the Rotary District 5280 Hall of Fame Award:

There is so much to say about PDG Elmer Jordan, but the words “Rotarian” and “gentleman” are the ones that come to mind first and foremost.  To our Rotary Club, Elmer epitomizes Rotary, always quietly giving advice, only when asked, and practicing what Rotary stands for, in his actions, in his speech and in all of his behaviors.  Calabasas Rotary club was the most fortunate of Clubs when PRID Elmer needed to change Rotary Clubs due to driving distance and he selected Calabasas as his new Club.  He embraced the move into District 5280 and offered his unfailing support and encouragement to Club members and to our Club, always urging “get involved”, especially into district positions.

Did you know that World Polio Day will be celebrated on October 24th?   We have much to celebrate, as the number of cases that have been reported in 2017 is just nine (9) as of the end of August.  We need to keep our fellow Rotarians, friends and family members aware that we haven't reached the finish line yet!
The year 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation.   Wouldn't it be wonderful if every Rotarian in our District 5280 would donate at least $19 or $20 to finish the job of eliminating polio forever? Already this year, so many Rotarians and clubs throughout the District have contributed to Polio Plus.  Rob's Run was a wonderful kick-off event to publicize and raise funds for Polio Plus!

Last week, Past District Governor, James "Jim" Hamai passed away in Cypress, California. He, with the support of his lovely wife Dorothy, led District 5280 in the Rotary year 1982-83.  He was a long time member of the Lawndale Rotary Club.  He had many friends in Rotary not only in District 5280, but leading Rotarians around the world. He was very committed to the Rotary Foundation, and through his leadership, he inspired his Lawndale Club to be one of the top ten per capita Rotary Clubs in the world in giving to the Foundation.

He also developed a life long friendship with his fellow Governor elect classmate in Oshikaga East Rotary club in Japan. The two PDGs arranged a club to club exchange with the youth in both Oshikaga East and the Lawndale Rotary clubs that lasted over 35 years. The children and grandchildren would spend one month each summer in Oshikaga Japan, then return with their Japanese guests to Lawndale for a month visit.  These were such powerful and educational experiences for those who participated in these exchanges. Jim's dedication to Rotary, and its ideals, will continue to influence Rotarians now and in the future.

Through the commitment by Rotarians for the past 31 years, the cases of polio in our world from over 350,000 cases in 1986 has diminished to just a handful of cases this calendar year.  There have only been four cases of polio reported this year, in just two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Rotary District 5280 has accomplished so many good works through the efforts of its individual members.  Last year, we were the first Rotary District in the world to have every individual member contribute to Polio Plus.  This was a huge accomplishment!  This year, we are attempting to accomplish this again for the second year in a row.

Many Rotarians, and non Rotarians alike, have asked the question, "So why do we still need to donate to Polio Plus?  This disease is practically gone!" Well, it is not gone, and if we are not vigilant, the disease could rise up and become an epidemic again in our world. We are so very close to eliminating this dreaded disease forever.  We need to continue to immunize children in the third world countries so those that cross the borders from Afghanistan and Pakistan do not spread the disease.  There have only been four cases of polio this calendar year, which occurred in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Two years ago there were a total of 74 cases; last year there were a total of 35 cases.  Rotary International is so very hopeful that within two years, the disease will no longer appear in our world.

SOLD is a narrative, feature film adaptation of the globally acclaimed novel by Patricia McCormick. Based on true stories, SOLD, is the story of Lakshmi who journeys from a pastoral, rural village in Nepal to a gritty brothel/prison called Happiness House in Kolkata, India.  Through one extraordinary girl’s story, SOLD illustrates the brutality of child trafficking, which affects millions of children around the globe every year.  Globally the average age of a trafficked girl is thirteen, the same age as the girl in the film.  SOLD was executive produced by Academy Award winner Emma Thompson. SOLD tells the story of an unforgettable 13 year-old girl and is both a call to action and a testament to the power and resilience of the human spirit.

Rotary has accomplished so much during our 31 year history of efforts to eliminate polio forever!  Rotary International has shared the following information for all Rotarians.

India has not reported a polio case since 2011, thanks largely in part to massive vaccination and surveillance campaigns that led to the country being officially certified polio-free in 2014. Subnational Immunizations Days continue in order keep India polio-free. For the first time, Rotary International staff members worked alongside health workers and volunteers in the field to help with polio eradication efforts. The World Health Organization along with Rotary International continue to provide immunizations to keep India polio free.

Did you know that Rotary International's Foundation began 100 years ago? The first donation to the Foundation was $26.50.  To celebrate this milestone, each Rotarian throughout the world is being asked this Rotary year to donate $26.50, or for large clubs, $2650 in total to Polio Plus. Wouldn't it be wonderful if every Rotarian in our District 5280 would donate this amount to finish the job of eliminating polio forever? We already have clubs that have reached this goal. Can we count on your club to reach this goal? Last year, we were the first District in the world to have 100 percent of its members donate to Polio Plus. Let's do it again this year!

During the last Rotary year, our District 5280 made Rotary history by being the first Rotary District in the world to have 100% of their members donate to Polio Plus! We are so very close to wiping out polio from our world.  There have only been a total of 19 cases this year of polio in our world, which were reported in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

It would be easy to say the numbers are few, and funds are no longer needed.  This is not true!  Immunizations still need to take place in these countries to make sure the remaining children receive immunizations and the newborns and very young continue to be immunized.  Monitoring for the next three years is also very important. Rotary International is asking every Rotarian throughout the world to contribute $26.50 this year for Polio Plus, as this is the Centennial Year of our Foundation, and this was the amount of the first contribution to the Foundation in 1917.

One of the best things about attending a Rotary International convention is the opportunity to meet Rotarians from around the world.  At Rotary’s most recent convention in Seoul, I struck up a conversation with a Rotarian from the eastern U.S.  We have so much to be proud of that I suggested that Rotary should spend more money on public awareness.

Congratulations to each club, and each member, in our Rotary 5280 District! Through the combined efforts of everyone in our District, we have almost $18,000 in donations contributed to individual Polio Plus accounts during this spring 2016 drive.  We have shown the solidarity of our District Rotarians in their efforts to honor the workers and security officers that were killed during the past 27 months in Pakistan that were giving polio immunizations to finish the job of eliminating polio forever. We are likely the first District in the world to accomplish this large scope of donations from every Rotarian  in our District for Polio Plus in one Rotary year. Congratulations for moving this terrible Tragedy in Pakistan to Triumph of eliminating polio forever by your personal support and contributions!

GREAT NEWS!  A majority of District 5280 Rotarians individually support Polio Plus! Already, over 55% of our Clubs in our District have contributed funds for Polio Plus by 100% of their members during this spring drive. Why are we doing this?   A total of 65 health workers have been killed in the past two years doing the good works of Rotary by providing immunizations in Pakistan.  From this terrible tragedy, we are determined to triumph by finishing the job of eliminating polio forever in the two countries it still exists, Pakistan and Afghanistan.  These workers gave their lives for the cause of eliminating polio.  In tribute to these workers, and to the determination of Rotarians in District 5280, I have challenged every Rotarian in our District to make a donation, no matter the size of the donation, to Polio Plus during this next month.  The vast majority of clubs have already committed to being 100% individual contributors to Polio Plus, and are in the process of sending their checks to the Polio Plus Chair, Shirley Giltzow, made out to the Rotary Foundation.

From this terrible tragedy, we are determined to triumph by finishing the job of eliminating polio forever in whatever country it still exists, which is now only Pakistan and Afghanistan.  These workers gave their lives for the cause of eliminating polio.  In tribute to these workers, and to the determination of Rotarians in District 5280, I challenge every Rotarian in our District to make a donation, no matter the amount of the donation, to Polio Plus during this next month.

Giving to The Rotary Foundation
The Rotary Foundation provides hope, health, and peace around the world.   So much good begins with these gifts: wells are constructed, children are vaccinated against illness, senior citizens are afforded meals and services, children and adults are educated and given professional opportunities. This work is vital to the children, families, and communities who benefit. Only when people’s basic needs are met, can they pursue the larger elements of human life including conflict resolution, community building, and peace.
Paul Harris Fellow
A Paul Harris Fellow is someone who contributes (or in whose name is contributed using Foundation recognition points), a gift of US$1,000 or more cumulatively to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or an approved global grant.
Becoming a Paul Harris Fellow is a tremendous accomplishment and honor as these contributions impact communities around the world. Paul Harris Fellows, in a very tangible way, provide stepping stones to a more harmonious world.

Join us for a dynamic District Breakfast on October 20, featuring keynote speaker Gil Garcetti. Since leaving the District Attorney’s office in 2000, Gil (father of Mayor Eric Garcetti) has become a full time photographer with seven published books and exhibitions and presentations around the world. Perhaps his most consequential book, Water Is Key, focuses on the rural villages of West Africa where millions do not have access to safe water. With his  photographs, essays, and stories from six trips to West Africa, Gil is able to motivate his audiences to help the rural villagers by bringing a bore hole well to their village, dramatically improve the sanitation, and provide resources for micro-credit entrepreneurs. As such, Gil is the perfect person to help us officially launch the effort in our District to raise a ONE MILLION DOLLAR Global Grant to improve the lives and health of over 25,000 Nigerians by providing increased access to safe water and improved sanitation and hygiene. The World Health Organization has released the latest statistics on polio cases worldwide. In its report, the WHO states, "In June, the wild poliovirus outbreaks in Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia and Kenya were assessed to be over by independent teams, having successfully interrupted transmission of the virus. While this is a sign that supplementary immunization activities and acute flaccid paralysis have been strengthened since all of the outbreaks began in 2013, it is essential for these gains to be maintained and built upon in order to protect children within these countries from the return of the virus. It is time to start the new Rotary year with new leadership and fresh ideas. The incoming club presidents and District leaders have been prepared for their responsibilities through numerous training and educational seminars.
Rotary International President Ravi Ravindran has chosen a beautiful theme for his year: "Be a gift to the world". Isn't it nice that we can provide a precious gift to someone? Rotarians have the power and capability to deliver wishes, whether they be clean water for remote villages, surgery for deformed children, eradication of the polio virus from the earth and the provision of tools for education. For over a century, Rotary International has built up a worldwide infrastructure with the most qualified human resources in any given region. Rotarians can address problems in our communities and around the world. We have the ability. We have the tools. It is up to us to engage and utilize our resources to improve the human condition.
In order to facilitate the development of of acquaintance as an opportunity for service, our District is developing an e-directory to help members network. Each member will be included in a Rotary database searchable by profession. This year many clubs in our District will focus on projects within our community that have relevance, sustainability, and a substantive impact. We will strive for a new balance in our projects by allocating our funds for our community and the world. There are many local and global projects lined up for our members to involve themselves. Using the tools that Rotary has provided, we will achieve new levels of success in these endeavors.
Let's make our Rotary the most respected charity organization in our community. Let's engage in Rotary activities with high energy, great passion,  and the desire to change lives for the better. Let's operate our organization in an efficient and productive manner. Let's be a gift to the community and the world.
Ellen and I look forward to serving with you this year and supporting your efforts as your serve your communities and others in need throughout the world.

LA to San Francisco Bicycle Tour to End Polio by District 5280 Interactors
Spring Break is usually a time for students to go to the beach, go on vacation, or just spend time with family and friends, and having a fun time free of school studies. Well, not so for three Interactors and their faculty advisor from the Hawthorne HS Interact Club! Club members Jose Diego, Sebastian Gonzalez, Chris Rendon, and Advisor Huy Hoang, are cycling LA to San Francisco on Spring Break to raise funds for End Polio.
Their goal, on this 8-day adventure, is to ride 500 miles from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Golden Gate Bridge and raise $5000. This amount will provide vaccines for 8000 children in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. You can support them by going to GoFundMe and pledging with a contribution. WE ARE THIS CLOSE to ending polio worldwide. Won’t you join us to make this happen!

On 20 September 2014, the Rotary E-Club of The Greater San Fernando Valley took over the generously-donated Arthur Murray Sherman Oaks Studio to host its Fifth Annual “Dance for the Children” to raise donations to The Rotary Foundation for PolioPlus.
Rotarians and friends, “sponsored” for as little as $10 by friends and family to dance, enjoyed many different music styles, dance lessons from E-Club Member and Arthur Murray dance instructor Sharon Gorrell, tasty snacks, and the knowledge that their combined efforts had raised enough, in excess of $5,600 US with the Gates Foundation match on top of it, to vaccinate more than 28,000 children.  The event’s five-year total is close to 60,000 children.  Roughly half of the donations have come from outside of Rotary, making this a major public outreach event as well.   Local businesses sponsor the event, so 100% of the dancer donations can go to PolioPlus.
“We dance for the children who can’t dance due to polio,” explains Gorrell, “so that no child will ever have to say that again.” For more information, visit the club's website here.

Sometime take a drive on Brand Avenue between the 134 Freeway and Colorado Boulevard in Glendale, and you will see a sight repeat itself. It was not enough that the Rotary Club of Glendale Sunrise expose itself once. No, they had to repeat it over and over again. Once loses count of the number of street banners that have the name “Rotary Club of Glendale Sunrise” on them. And as if this were not enough, Governor Elsa has also gotten into the act. For every street banner that identifies the Glendale Sunrise Club, there is a banner with the name District Governor Elsa Gillham on it.

Our club will really miss Russ Rothner, our President Elect. Russ was an active member of our club and was instrumental in building a long term relationship with Moffett School in Lennox and our club. He was a active community volunteer and worked for many years with the Jimmy Miller Foundation and served as our Community Service Director. One of the first things anyone noticed about Russ was that he always had a smile on his face.  He seemed to be someone who loved life and could become your best friend. He enjoyed the outdoors, but his true passions were his family, with a close second being skiing (water and snow).  Russ also loved a good party, whether it was with his drinking buddies or the entire Rotary Club.

Congratulations to the Governor's Senior LA Kings Fan, Mel Powell! His devotion to the LA Kings is rivaled only by his devotion to Rotary District 5280. In addition to his service to his home club, the Rotary E-Club of the Greater San Fernando Valley, Mel has been an instrumental part of our District's success this year. Let's just say Mel is the Justin Williams of the District. With an extensive knowledge of Rotary, Mel has been a great resource to both Governor Doug and all of our Rotary clubs. Mel has built ties with a number of Rotary clubs that have merged into District 5280 after having been a part of the former District 5260. Behind the scenes, Mel was a crucial member of the District Newsletter team, imbuing each edition with riveting material and his trademark humor. Thank you for your service, Mel! Congratulations on another Stanley Cup Championship!

At the District Conference in May, several special awards were presented to Rotarians and Rotary Clubs for their outstanding service to the District and Rotary International. Linton Morgan (pictured above left), a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Inglewood, received the 2013-2014 "Rotarian of the Year" award. Many who have worked with Linton over the years have seen his dedication as both an Assistant Governor and avid District photographer. Larry Bender (pictured above right), a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Hawthorne-LAX-Lennox, received the "Rotary International Distinguished Service Award". Rotary International gives this award to only a select few Rotarians each year. Larry was recognized for his tireless work with the Polio campaign. Several other Rotarians and Rotary Clubs were recognized for their service as well.

During Friday's world record-breaking Sydney Harbour bridge climb, Rotary members raised enough money to protect 240,000 kids from polio. Despite the physically grueling four-hour trek up and down the bridge's storied steel arches, the 340 participants kept their good spirits and stood side-by-side waving 278 flags. "When the helicopters were going around, you just felt like one great big nation," says Graeme Davies, district governor of the Rotary Club of Kincumber in Australia. Read more.

Upon returning from our District Conference I received a disturbing email from Club AG Matt Schaff, a member of our Woodland Hills Club. He shared with me that he had made only a few aware that he is a cancer patient, having Stage 4 Liver cancer. He also found out yesterday that he was not a candidate for a clinical trial. So for now, he must wait and hope for a new drug or a new treatment therapy.  He tells me that there is an epidemic of people ages 50-70 who are going through this.  They estimate 3.5 million in the USA and most don't even know yet.  Please, call it prayer, support, encouragement, karma, whatever the comfortable term for you might be, but do it, for Matt and for all other in our Clubs facing health issues.  It works!

It is with tremendous sadness and shock to announce the passing of El Segundo Rotarian Julia Abreu-Mason.  Julia was so active in so many ways throughout her Rotary career.  I have fond thoughts of her efforts in building, quite successfully and enthusiastically,  the Paul Harris Society. She was active within her Club, active in working with the Foundation, active in whatever responsibility she undertook. District Administrator Tori Hettinger recalls the times she took her grandchildren with her to the District Office while she worked on Rotary programs.  Most of all, we remember the devotion to her husband Bill. Details are not known at this time. We join together to offer our sympathy, fondness and prayers to her family.  We are all just stunned. - DG Doug.

Rotary District 5280's partnership with Vision To Learn is making a difference to children across Southern California, one pair of glasses at a time. At Westminster Elementary School in Venice, over 60 children were provided free eye exams and eye glasses. The school nurse told Westchester Rotarian Nora McLellen that two twin sisters who had severe astigmatism had to sit in the very front of the classroom, straining to see properly. With their new glasses from Vision To Learn, the sisters will be able to concentrate on learning, not struggling to see the chalkboard.

Collectively, we, the military and veterans of Rotary, have done a magnificent job, guaranteeing that our constitutional form of government survives. In the process, we liberated millions of people from tyranny.  Now, as Rotarians, we focus on service above self.  The purpose of Rotary’s "Honoring Our Veterans" program is to create an inventory of the accomplishments of the veterans in the District.

The Rotary Club of Westchester’s 2013 Home Make Over project was a great example of the community coming together to help a neighbor. With the hard work of Rotarians, contractors and 175 volunteers (including the Boys Scouts and Knights of Columbus), the Westchester Rotary Club repainted, replanted, and remodeled the entire home of Karen Ricks. Karen, her late husband Tim, and their children are long time Westchester residents who contribute their time to the Boy Scouts, Knights of Columbus, the Choral Singers, and other activities that make our community a great place to live.  This was the Rotary Club of Westchester’s chance to give back to them.  Visit the club’s Facebook page to see more photos.

The Rotary Club of Historic Filipinotown has been coordinating relief efforts with their partnering club in the Philippines, the Rotary Club of Cebu City. Recently, Rotarians spearheaded a massive food distribution to typhoon victims in Malapascua, a town at the north tip of Cebu island. It is a fishing community that is home to 1,200 families (total population of 7,000 people). The cargo that the Rotarians collected was loaded onto a pump boat, which held nearly 3 truckloads of goods. The cargo was unloaded and unloaded by human hands- no forklifts or cranes. The base of operations was the Malapascua Legends Hotel. The entire hotel staff helped in the distribution of the food. When the distribution was over, about 800 of the 1,200 families on the island had received food bags. To find out how to contribute to relief efforts, please visit our Philippines Disaster Relief Efforts page.

The cross-town rivalry continues! On November 26th, Rotarians across the District showed up at the 5th annual "USC vs. UCLA Tailgate Luncheon" hosted by the four Torrance Rotary clubs and Redondo Beach Rotary club. Rotarians supporting USC and UCLA were greeted by the school mascots- USC's Traveler and Tommy Trojan and UCLA's Joe Bruin. Once inside the Double Tree hotel, the fans were treated to a healthy dose of rivalry trash talking, a spirited live auction, and lively anecdotes from USC's J.K. McKay and UCLA's Kevin Jordan. UCLA rang the victory bell this year, but it was a win-win for the athletic programs of the Torrance Unified School District and Redondo Union High School, for whom the luncheon's proceeds benefitted. On Friday November 8, 2013,  two members of the Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club combined their love of Rotary and the love for each other by having their wedding at the Club’s 7 AM meeting.  David Smith and Peggy Riddle announced their engagement at the first meeting of the new Rotary year on July 12, to which the club members gave a standing ovation.  This inspired David and Peggy to want to share their special day with their Club family. Seven years ago, David sponsored Peggy’s membership in Rotary and that was the beginning of the romance.

We are in the process of coordinating our relief efforts to the people of the Philippines, but just as important we are also developing the methodology needed to develop an infrastructure within our District for future disasters and our ability to assist in a meaningful and timely manner.  Governor Doug, DGE Elsa Gillham, Sr. Assistant Governor of International Service Marc Benard, Historic Filipinotown Club President Leo, members of that club and District Administrator Tori Hettinger recently discussed how best to accomplish what is needed and how to best respond.

November 18: The Rotary Club of Historic Filipino Town's sister club, the Rotary Club of Cebu, Philippines, has reached many of the towns hit by the typhoon. The club gave food to 6,000 families in just one town alone. They also gave food to thousands of families in more northern towns. The Rotary club reports that what these town need now are construction materials like galvanized sheets, lumber and umbrella nails. Please contact Leo Pandac, the president of the Rotary Club of Historic Filipino Town for further information on how to assist. Click here for more photos of Rotary's relief efforts.

November 13: Our District is working closely with the Rotary Club of Historic Filipino Town in typhoon disaster relief efforts. We will continue to post updates of our relief efforts. Leo Pandac, president of the Rotary Club of Historic Filipino Town, has the following update (as of 11/13/13):
"Our Rotary club is humbled and honored to take on the task to assist in every way possible the victims of the super typhoon “Yolanda” (known as Haiyan in the West) that hit the Philippines.  As you know we’ve had an ongoing project ‘RC HIFI PH Relief Good’, sending goods to the Philippines with our collaborating Rotary Clubs and a Religious organization who we have trusted to store and distribute as needed when catastrophe strikes the country.
Update: Philippines Typhoon Relief 2013-11-13 00:00:00Z 0
November 12: Filipino Relief Efforts have already started, not only with Rotarians and many of our affiliated organizations, but with a multitude of relief organizations.
The wheels of Rotary are somewhat slower, but more methodical.  Human nature is such that we all want to do something, now. But Rotary excels at being at the site of a tragedy long after all others have left. We excel at first determining actual needs coupled with how best to deliver them and, most importantly, getting them into the hands of those in need, and no one else.
Working with President Leo Pandac and the Rotary Club of Historic Filipino Town, we are making contact with Rotary Clubs throughout the Philippines to determine what we can gather and send, and how.  Our relief efforts will go directly to Rotary Clubs there who are establishing distribution points and methods. Rotarians working with Rotarians to enhance the lives of others; it’s what we do. Further details will be posted in the coming days.

This year’s Foundation Celebration was an out of this world experience. Hosted at the California Science Center, over 600 Rotarians sat under the wings and the belly of the Space Shuttle Endeavor. As attendees supported The Rotary Foundation, they also enjoyed a keynote speech by Space Shuttle Endeavor pilot General Kevin Chilton, entertainment from emcee Fritz Coleman, and of course, the breath-taking views of the space shuttle itself, floating just a few feet above their heads.

Throughout the Rotary year there are special emphases placed on each month. November is “The Rotary Foundation” month.  We keep The Rotary Foundation on our minds in a variety of ways: while working on projects in our communities and abroad, purchasing raffle tickets for the Paul Harris Celebration or sending another contribution to The Rotary Foundation to reach another level as a Paul Harris Fellow, Major Donor or Paul Harris Society.

October 29, 2013- The Rotary Clubs of Downey and Bellflower held a joint meeting to celebrate the official Governor's Visit to Doug's home club- the Rotary Club of Downey. While the Governor's Visit to his or her home club is always a celebratory event, this meeting had special significance. The clubs, along with District leadership, showed their support to Governor Doug and his family as First Lady Connie continues her brave battle against cancer. All attendees wore pearl pins, as white is the official color of lung cancer awareness. In February 2010, she and a group of fellow Rotarians traveled to Delhi, India, and then spread out in teams to take part in a "National Immunization Day" in support of the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. In November 2011, Julie sat down with the Rotary E-club of the Greater San Fernando Valley to share her story.

Polio has declined rapidly since 1985, but the fight isn't over. While polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, for as little as US$0.60, a child can be vaccinated for life. If we don't finish the fight right now, more than 10 million children under the age of five could be paralyzed in the next 40 years. Rotary raises funds to make sure every child receives access to the polio vaccine. See the impact your contribution can make.

It was a pleasure to be joined by Interact advisor Cecilia Remeta and Interact members. The Rotarians were quite impressed with the maturity and enthusiasm of our students." Rotary District 5280 works closely with the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton. The program for October 26th is a continuation of our close relationship that has developed over the last few years. This program, which is very close to Halloween, will make the troops, especially the enlisted Marines, realize that their families are very important to Rotarians. Bear in mind that about 160 babies are born monthly on the base. There is a constant need for baby items, such as pampers. What would be ideal is for each club to make a concerted effort to collect baby items that can be brought down.

In a world where the word  hero is tossed around so loosely, we can lose sight of who is a true hero. We never should. And while defining a hero can be based on various criteria, one class of  hero, our Veterans can never be debated, nor should they ever be forgotten. Help us to remember them at our District picnic and throughout the year by letting us know who they are, or even better by giving the heroes of your club the Veteran Data Form to complete. Once completed, return it to Joel Forman and we’ll take it from there! And a special thanks to Joel Forman for spearheading this project.

Last Thursday my beautiful bride, Connie, was diagnosed with cancer. Yesterday, we learned it was of the lung and that it has spread. She faces a battery of tests and treatments while she fights this hideous disease. As the word of this drifted throughout the District we were genuinely overwhelmed with the outpouring of love, support and prayers. Then we were wondering why we were so overwhelmed; why would we have expected anything else from such a wonderful group of people? Please include Connie in your prayers, they are welcomed; but in doing so, please also remember others in our District who are undergoing their own struggles and health issues.
We have had to postpone some Club visits as I stay with Connie, at least until her treatment regimen is known and for that I apologize. Do know that I am proud to be your District Governor and will remain so with the support of all as we get through this incredibly different, yet wildly successful Rotary year. -Doug

More than 90 Rotarians and companions from District 5280 attended the 2013 Rotary International Convention in Lisbon, Portugal.
With more than 22,500 attendees, the RI Convention provided an excellent forum for learning about various methods to address Areas of Focus issues as well as reconnecting with old and making new Rotarian friends.
Highlights included opening ceremony speaker Portugal Minister of Solidarity and Social Security Pedro Mota Soares in addition to performance by Il Divo, and the fellowship amongst our members at the District 5280 Reception hosted by DGE Elsa Gilham. (REDONDO BEACH) May 8, 2013 -- Project Amigo began in the late 1980s when founder Ted Rose came to visit the area’s volcano, and instead found a poverty-stricken rural village a great need to support the literacy campaign.  A few years later he and his wife, Susan Hill, moved to Mexico and set up shop to help the children of poor villagers.  There they joined the Colima Rotary Club.

Colima, Mexico is an agricultural town which attracts many other residents from different regions of Mexico. Currently the population in Colima is approximately 2,000 people. Project Amigo is enabling the poor children of Colima to achieve their highest potential by providing educational opportunities, material support, enrichment activities, medical and dental services.

How successful are they? Well, they currently have 34 university graduates, 100 kids enrolled in higher education and 200 in elementary school that have benefited from Project Amigo. . Noe and Mireya are two great examples of the success of the university of Colima. They both graduated from there  and both stayed in the community to continue to improve the conditions of this town and also to ensure the literacy campaign continues to strengthen. There are several humanitarian service projects that are ongoing through Project Amigo.

 Image Image

Ted and Susan are also here to reach out to other clubs in hopes of gaining support for scholarship programs for young students in Colima. For more information visit

Thanks to Rick Mendoza, PDG, for bringing these Rotarians and their story to us.  President Nancy donated $250 club funds to Project Amigo.

Following the untimely passing of District Governor-Elect Jim Dyer in mid-January, the current leadership of District 5280 turned to Rotary protocol to name a replacement.  After consulting with Rotary International officials in Evanston, Illinois, Governor Lew Bertrand announced that PDG Doug Baker will replace Dyer and serve as District Governor.  Following is the letter he wrote to the District Leadership Team announcing the appointment:

"This is to announce to the Leadership team of D-5280 that PDG Doug Baker has graciously accepted the appointment to serve as DG for the Rotary year 2013-2014. This appointment was made in compliance with the rules and guidelines as set forth by Rotary International in the RI Manual of Procedure and RI Code of Policies. This appointment was made in concurrence with PDG Scot Clifford, District Legal Counsel, and Jim Damato, Supervisor Club Administration at Rotary International.

"These references clearly define the line of succession as:

  1. The District Governor Nominee (DGN)
  2. The current District Governor (DG)
  3. Qualified Past District Governors (PDGs)

"DGN Elsa Gillham has made it clear she is not in a position to fill the vacancy due to personal needs and business obligations at this time.

"As the current DG, I feel that bringing the 65 clubs together has been a major goal of this Rotary year. I am confident this has been accomplished and I am very proud of the cohesive efforts on the part of all District leadership resulting in the successful merging of District 5260 & 5280. I am most flattered to have been asked by many Rotarians to continue as DG for 2013-2014, but my family has made it abundantly clear – they want and need me back. I will decline this position as DG for 2013-2014.

"Next in descending seniority is PDG Brad Robinson who has declined the position.

"Please join me in acknowledging Doug Baker as DG for 2013-2014 and extending our utmost support."

(Bangkok, Thailand)  The May 2012 issue of The Rotary Foundation newsletter, Our Foundation, contains several articles from the recent Rotary International convention in Thailand.  The lead article compares progress of Rotary's campaign to eradicate polio with the seemingly insurmoutable obstacles three-decades ago to eradicate smallpox.  That campaign was ultimately successful writes Jeetendra Sharma, associate editor, because a "dedicated, resourceful array of national and internationl staff persisted."  Sharma concludes that a "dedicated, resourceful array of national and international staff and the commitment of Rotary International" will be needed to defeat polio in the three remaining endemic countries.  Click here to read Sharma's article and learn about developments at the recent RI convention.

Dear Fellow DGs and DGEs

As part of our transitional efforts (to District 5280), I wanted to forward to you this information from the Rotary Club of Lancaster West.  They are putting together a very unique event for April 7, 2012—and it is a fundraiser for Polio Plus.  Ordinarily, I would not send along information about an “ordinary” club fundraiser, but all the proceeds will go to Polio Plus, and it involves cars and Willow Springs Raceway. As you can see, they really want to make this a huge Polio Plus fundraiser.  I’m planning on attending—it should be a lot of fun!

Click HERE for a flyer with more information about this unique event. Or HERE to visit the Rotary Polio Plus event at the Willow Springs Raceway.

"When we in Rotary work for peace, we don’t do it by negotiating treaties or demonstrating in the streets. Instead, we build peace by example – by working together, whatever our nationality or background, and putting others’ needs above our own. We build peace by dealing with the problems that disrupt people’s ability to live normal, peaceful lives – whether those problems are a lack of water, or sanitation, or safe, affordable housing; whether they stem from a shortage of education or health care, or a need to build productive and positive connections between communities. In everything we do, we rely on our good name.

"This is why all of us have a responsibility to be sure that our good name is indeed known. We need to not just work through Rotary, but talk about Rotary – letting the world know about the work we are doing, the differences we are making, and the benchmarks we are setting. Our Rotary work speaks to our belief that a better, more peaceful world is possible, and we need to be sure that our voices are heard."

(SAN DIEGO) This afternoon at the International Assembly, Rotary International officials announced that the Gates Foundation Challenge Grant has surpassed the US$200 million mark and has raised US$202.6 million as of 17 January 2011.
In addition Jeff Raikes, Chief Executive Officer of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was at the Assembly and announced that the Gates Foundation has awarded The Rotary Foundation an additional US$50 million grant for polio eradication.  The new $50 million grant from the Gates Foundation is not a challenge grant; it results from Rotary’s early achievement of the $200 million milestone and of the need for continued funding support for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.  RI leaders are aware that there may be many questions concerning the additional grant from the Gates Foundation so to help answer many of these questions a Fact Sheet has been prepared. Please feel free to share the Fact Sheet with your fellow Rotarians.

"January 13, 2012 will mark one year since the last case of polio was reported in India," predicted John Osterlund, general manager of The Rotary Foundation, at the District 5280 breakfast earlier this week.  Two days later the "polio-free" deadline came and went without a new case being reported. Meaning India has been free of any new cases of the dreaded disease for a year. "Now instead of the four so-called 'PAIN' countries, the only three countries remaining are Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria," he said.

Learn more about this momentous development on the Rotary International Web site and the significance it has for RI President Kalyan Banerjee. In his remarks thanking Rotarians worldwide for achieving this important milestone, President Banerjee urged avoiding complacency in Rotary's continuing effort to erradicate polio from the face of the planet.

An Open Letter to all Rotarians:

With your help, we have made tremendous progress in the fight to eradicate polio. We are at an historic moment -- less than 1% away from the end of polio forever. In honor of World Polio Day on 24 October 2011, we are asking for your help to tell the world about Rotary’s achievements and to finish the job.

We would like you to encourage your members to participate in two major online initiatives: a 2-for-1 donation recognition campaign and a social media push promoting Rotary’s global polio eradication efforts.

Immediately following the devastating tornadoes across the South, Governor Doug asked me to contact Rotary District Governors in the affected areas to see where the greatest need was and how we could help our fellow Rotarians.  One of the hardest hit areas has been Northern Alabama represented by Rotary District 6860.  We have been communicating with DG John Valieant and his Disaster Relief Coordinator PDG J.G. Brazil who tell us that individual Clubs, along with State and Federal agencies are responding to the immediate recovery needs. Where they are looking for help is with the long term recovery and rebuilding that will take months and in many cases years.

Congratulations are in order for the Carson Gardena Dominguez Rotary Club, as they have recently supported the Polio Plus Campaign by ordering 140 of the Goodbye Polio Roses. The Club members purchased 40 bareroot roses for their Club members, and ordered another 100 bareroot roses as a fund raising project.  The Club members have arranged a table at the Carson Mall on February 12th, and will be encouraging shoppers to consider purchasing the bareroot roses as a Valentine's Day gift for a loved one.

Over four dozen members are involved in our District leadership this year. I anticipated all of them would stay busy but I really hoped one person would have nothing to do at all! Sadly, he's been busy, too.

One of the premiere events that link Rotarians with our high school students is the Art/Music/Speech contest. This annual event is an outstanding way to not only recognize and celebrate talent among high school students, but also to engage Rotarians in serving our youth.
