Twenty-five years ago today, the Supreme Court of the United States decided women could be members of Rotary. Two years later, in 1989, the Rotary Council on Legislation opened doors to membership for women worldwide.
District 5280 invites you to attend a 25th Anniversary Celebration of Women in Rotary on Sunday, May 20, 2012, 11:30-1:30, at Killer Shrimp in Marina del Rey. This luncheon is open to all Rotarians, spouses, partners and friends.
We are honored to have Syliva Whitlock as our special speaker. In 1982 the generous men of the Rotary Club of Duarte invited Sylvia and two other women to be members only to have Rotary International terminate the Duarte Rotary charter. In 1987, the Supreme Court ruled in their favor and had the "Ex" removed from their title and once again were paying Rotary International dues. An interesting story you will want to hear! Sylvia was the first woman to ever serve as a Club President and to attend PETS. She will be District 5300 Governor for 2012-13. Learn more at the luncheon!
