On Friday November 8, 2013,  two members of the Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club combined their love of Rotary and the love for each other by having their wedding at the Club’s 7 AM meeting.  David Smith and Peggy Riddle announced their engagement at the first meeting of the new Rotary year on July 12, to which the club members gave a standing ovation.  This inspired David and Peggy to want to share their special day with their Club family. Seven years ago, David sponsored Peggy’s membership in Rotary and that was the beginning of the romance.

The wedding took place at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, the usual meeting place for the Glendale Sunrise Club.   Attending the wedding were 110 guests, including club members, visiting Rotarians, family and friends.   Relatives travelled from North Carolina, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming and Nevada. Among the visiting Rotarians were PDG Drew Frohlich, PDG Chuck Rhinehart, and District Governor Elect, Elsa Gillham.

President Eric Hamilton called the meeting to order, followed by the flag salute and the Four Way Test. Instead of the usual inspiration, he called on Daren Clary, David’s cousin, who welcomed the guests and introduced a slide presentation about the couple.   Lt Joshua Sneed of the Salvation Army, who is also a club member, officiated. The wedding party entered to the bride’s favorite love song, the Hawaiian Wedding Song romantically sung by Elvis Presley. The bride came down the aisle as Sharon Townsend, another club member, played a beautiful selection on the piano. The couple exchanged very special vows before people they loved, and were pronounced husband and wife.   After the ceremony there was a champagne breakfast for all attendees.  That evening the couple celebrated their wedding with a dinner and dance party with 125 friends and family at the Oakmont Country Club.
