Many Rotarians, and non Rotarians alike, have asked the question, "So why do we still need to donate to Polio Plus?  This disease is practically gone!" Well, it is not gone, and if we are not vigilant, the disease could rise up and become an epidemic again in our world. We are so very close to eliminating this dreaded disease forever.  We need to continue to immunize children in the third world countries so those that cross the borders from Afghanistan and Pakistan do not spread the disease.  There have only been four cases of polio this calendar year, which occurred in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Two years ago there were a total of 74 cases; last year there were a total of 35 cases.  Rotary International is so very hopeful that within two years, the disease will no longer appear in our world.

But, it still needs resources to achieve this long time goal.  Be part of the solution!  Rotary International, at this 100th anniversary year of the Rotary Foundation, is asking every Rotarian to donate $26.50 to Polio Plus, the amount of the first donation 100 years ago that began our Foundation. Shirley Giltzow, District 5280 Polio Plus Chair, is eager to help you with the paperwork needed to give credit to every Rotarian in your club.  Please contact her at shirley_giltzow@live.com for assistance with the all necessary Rotary identification numbers and she will help you complete the Multiple Donor form.  Together, we can and will eliminate polio forever!!
