LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey held a press conference on March 31 with representatives from District 5280 and the Rotary Club of LA5. She announced a partnership between the LA5 club, District 5280 and her office for the Senior Scam Outreach program.

The LA5 Scam Awareness Committee (SAC), Co-Chaired by Steve Cooley and Hernan Vera, are taking on a “first ever” Community Service Literacy project reaching out to seniors to increase their awareness of scams and hopefully preventing them becoming the victim of a scam.  LA5 is the project Lead Club.  Committee Members identify senior citizen centers, distribute the DA’s brochures, and make presentations at other Rotary District 5280 Clubs to assist them in distributing brochures in their communities.

SAC Members like Allissia Johnson made a presentation at the Senior Services Network Meeting at the Carson Community Center to representatives from south LA Countycities who will assist in coordinating presentations in their respective cities.  Peggy York has been busy making presentations with the Salvation Army to 400 seniors in their programs.  Kathy Turner is working with St. Vincent’s Meals on Wheels to distribute 3,000 brochures to elderly people.

You may have had a family member or know someone who has been the victim of a scam.  This is your chance to help prevent your family and friends, and seniors in your community from becoming victims of crimes. Contact Gerry Turner at gerryturner@msn.com to have your club make presentations and distribute brochures in your community.
