On April 25, 2015 a magnitude 7.9 Richter scale earthquake hit Nepal, succeeded the following day by a second earthquake of 6.7 magnitude. Numerous aftershocks followed. Approximately 6,000 people have been reported dead, with 11,000 other casualties identified, and still counting.

Our Rotary District 5280 fully understands the urgent need and is organizing a relief effort. Both immediate and long-term action plans need to be enacted. For immediate action, together with RI's endorsement, any club-generated financial support can be channeled through either:
  1. The D5280 Disaster Relief Fund in collaboration with Nepal D3292 c/o DG Kumar Piya, or
  2. Disaster Aid USA (provider of ShelterBox, tents, etc.) at www.disasteraidusa.com

Collected funds will be utilized for the acquisition of necessary supplies such as food, water, clothing, medical kids and materials for temporary shelters, to be distributed to affected areas with the most need.

Our collaborative effort will significantly empower additional relief, recovery and reconstructive activities in the coming days.

We will be following up with clubs on the methodology for providing donations-in-kind once we have established and verified the reliability of that pathway.

Many thanks to all of the clubs that have already made inquiry on this matter.

Yours in Rotary,
DG Elsa Gillham, D5280 Governor
